The first time i arrived here at Dumaguete City, i didn’t understand what my feeling was. You know when you leave a place where you spent sometime of your life and you get used to what's around you, you feel kind of sad no matter how exciting is the new place you're moving to.
Well, i grew up in Bicol province, it is in Luzon, one of the three major islands of the Philippines. After my college, i moved with my sisters in Manila- the capital city of the country, to basically hunt for a job and see what's going on around. At first, i was a little out of place with the fact that i came from a province which is a little behind of the moderns of the world. Then i finally got a job being a call center agent and in time was able to adapt well with my colleagues and the big world called “CITY". So i got busy, got new friends and got freedom. You know when i say "freedom" i refer to the money that you earn, it basically let you do most of the things you can't when you don’t have it. It's funny thinking how limited you are when your pocket is empty. Anyhow, i got pretty much adjusted to the place and i should say i was happy. One good thing that happened too was i finally met my soulmate, if it's true i dont know. A white guy who i never thought i would really meet. It was all about how our thoughts blended well and how we respect each other. We have that commonality in such many ways. So there, my new life started and i didn’t resent it. Then moving to Dumaguete became major part of our decision. A lot of people say that it was a very nice place to live with and i should say YES, it's probably is.
When the plane landed, i was full of different emotions, thinking i was farther now from my hometown. The first few days here, i felt like going back and had a little regret. Well that's normal when you feel homesick and you see new faces around. One truth was, i also missed the fast phase world that Manila has and the city looks. On the other hand, this place-Dumaguete City is quiet and a good place for tourists. I specifically would address it to hikers and divers.
The place is not different than any other provinces in the Philippines. You'll see public market, farms, jeepneys, tricycles, universities, vendors and normal people walking. To literally appreciate this place, you should spend sometime visiting the diver's centers. The city is known for having one of the best diving sites in the world. You should also do some snorkeling and boating. I actually visited the Dolphin's Bay in Bais City on my second week here. I loved the sight of these dolphins in groups, swimming and gliding together at the same time. I just felt a bit sorry for not having the right timing for my camera to catch them while they glide altogether. I had some photo though of maybe one or two dolphins swimming close to our boat. We also visited the Sandbar- a white sand area that floats in the middle of the ocean once it is low tide. You won't see it anyway after 3 pm as the tourist guide told us. There were cottages built on the sandbar which tourists can rent to stay at, i actually saw few white guys with their jets visiting that place as well when we were there.
One of the good places you can see downtown is the boulevard. Every night you'll see teenagers sitting on the grass or on the bench having fun and spending time together. Probably most of them are high school and college students that love to go out together and have fun. I really appreciate the trees that give shades to the people and the green grass that make the area looks fresh plus the breeze of the ocean and the view of the port where these ferry boats stop and also the sight of the restaurants on the other side of the street. You'll see white guys, Koreans, Filipinos etc., chatting together eating or drinking beers. White and brown really mix well, as couples or partners you see walking everywhere in dumaguete. Foreigner’s love dating Filipinas and have them around with their adventure. Downtown is really not the place for the tourists, its nothing special aside from the boulevard and the park. The real beauty of
Dumaguete is there at the ocean and by the mountains and all the secret places where you see the hidden nature. I should say I’m still a tourist here and i should see most of those.
Dumaguete City is adventure; Dumaguete City is for hikers, divers and tourists. It is a place of gentle people. Maybe soon I’ll be more gentle too...
